Living Museum site visit to Vincent Hair Salon, George Town Celebrations, Penang Heritage Festival, Malaysia, 6 July 2012. The woman in blue was the "facilitator" (site interpreter) of the visit.
This is one of the few traditional men's-only hair salons left in George Town. The truncated board on top gives an idea of the low prices they continue to charge for such hairdressing services as cutting, styling, and colouring, as well as shaving, massage, and ear cleaning. Young hairdressers avoid working at an establishment like this: the pay is low, and there's no glitz and glamour. The oldest of the ladies has worked here for 40-50 years, but she hardly looks her age. When these women retire, the business will close.
If you look really closely, you can spot my reflection. But, having photographed at this salon before, I knew to keep out of view!
